This article examines the phenomenon of communication between humans and artificial intelligence (AI) from linguistic and cognitive perspectives. The main focus is on the AI’s ability to model natural language, i.e., to perform linguistic imitation, and the communicative illusion that this process creates in the human mind. Modern neural network models imitate human linguistic behavior by performing tasks such as text generation, dialogue management, and adherence to stylistic and pragmatic norms. However, this resemblance is based not on genuine semantic understanding or linguistic consciousness, but on statistical probabilities and algorithmic computations.
The article analyzes the tendency of users to attribute anthropomorphic qualities – such as “understanding,” “intention,” and “emotion” – to AI during interaction. This phenomenon is described as a linguistic illusion, with its causes explained from the perspectives of pragmatics, discourse theory, and psycholinguistics. Additionally, the study addresses politeness strategies in human – AI communication and the relationship between the form of user requests and the scope and depth of AI responses.
