Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of the authorial strategy in contemporary Kazakhstani prose. It examines the meaning of the term “authorial strategy”, as well as various approaches to its study, including the techniques and means through which an authorial strategy is expressed in a literary work. Of particular interest within the framework of the stated topic is the short prose of Umit Tazhken, in which the traditions of classical literature are combined with postmodern narrative techniques. The basis for addressing the stated topic is the insufficient study of the author’s work and modern methods of analyzing works in the context of the problem of author’s strategy. The thematic range of her short stories is highly diverse and includes the fate of the individual and the nation within the flow of history, as well as the moral values and ethical norms of the contemporary the post-Soviet period. The leading genre in the writer’s prose is the short story, characterized by extreme conciseness and semantic density of the plot. Authorial strategy manifests itself in a literary work at various levels. The methodology for identifying authorial strategy was developed by the contemporary scholar V.V.Prozorov. According to his concept, authorial strategies acquire distinct contours through close attention to the psychological and philological triad of attention, participation, and discovery. The analysis of U.Tazhken’s short prose is aimed at identifying the forms and methods of authorial strategy. The author seeks not so much to recount events as to enter into a dialogue with the reader, perceiving the reader as an interlocutor. The plots of her short stories are realistic and authentic, and the characters are contemporaries of the reader. At the same time, U.Tazhken’s short prose reveals features of various literary and artistic genres, which provides grounds for characterizing it as metaprose, and the story is like a metastory.
