Abstract

This article examines the image of Mount Kazylyk in artistic consciousness as reflected in mythological narratives and the oral literary traditions of the Turkic peoples. Particular attention is paid to the concept of the “spatial code,” explored through the analysis of a specific toponym, with an emphasis on its original meanings and conceptual foundations in traditional cognition. The study identifies the artistic and aesthetic functions of the toponym Kazylyk, whose symbolic significance was shaped by mythological consciousness. The findings demonstrate that the sacred function of the toponym Kazylyk originated in the epic tradition of the Oghuz–Kipchak period and continued to develop in nineteenth-century Kazakh literature. The functions of this toponym are comparatively examined in the oral literary heritage of various Turkic peoples. The study approaches Kazylyk as a mythopoetic toponym. To investigate the place and functions of the mountain and city name Kazylyk in the Turkic worldview, the analysis is based on The Book of Dede Korkut and the tolgau of Küderiqoja Köshekuly. The use of the toponym as a literary device for constructing artistic space is compared with its representation in mythological narratives. Based on the analysis of the cognitive and artistic functions of the Kazylyk toponym, the study formulates a number of scholarly conclusions.
