Abstract

The article examines the use of proverbs and sayings in the works of Alikhan Bokeykhan. During the study, it was found that the works of the Alash intellectual contain more than 150 proverbs and sayings. More than a hundred of these are Kazakh proverbs, about 30 (28) are Russian, while the remaining ten or so are French, Greek, and Ukrainian proverbs and sayings. About ten proverbs appear in several variants. Bilingual Alikhan Bokeykhan accurately translated Kazakh proverbs into Russian and vice versa, sometimes interpreting the meaning of Kazakh proverbs in Russian. Through this approach, the scholar contributed to strengthening interlingual connections and intercultural communication, promoting the literature and culture of his nation, and familiarizing readers with the lifestyle of the Kazakh people. The use of proverbs and sayings as headlines of newspaper articles and chapter titles of books became a tradition in the works of Alash scholars led by Alikhan Bokeykhan in the early 20th century. The practice of maintaining the content of proverbs while replacing individual components with synonymous words is also one of the distinctive features of Alikhan Bokeykhan’s language.
